    Get PDF
Background: The aims study of this work is the effect of violet laser beam  irradiating on the optical properties of the Polyvinyl alcohol PVA before and after irradiation to a laser beam of different time 10, 20, 30 and 40 minute. Materials and Methods: The polymer powder PVA 0.008 mg  was dissolved in 7 ml distilled water at  temperature 40 °C and the thickness of the film was  3000 nm by using weight method to measure the thickness of the films. A semiconductor laser with a wavelength of 405 nm was used to irradiate the films. Results: The absorbance, transmittance and reflectance spectra of thick films before and after laser irradiation were plotted. The energy gap and optical constants were calculated. Conclusions: The irradiation with the violet laser causes a breakdown of the bonds, which causes a decrease in the absorbance and reflectance spectrum, while the energy gap increases

Planetary migration in evolving planetesimals discs

In the current paper, we further improved the model for the migration of planets introduced in Del Popolo et al. (2001) and extended to time-dependent planetesimal accretion disks in Del Popolo and Eksi (2002). In the current study, the assumption of Del Popolo and Eksi (2002), that the surface density in planetesimals is proportional to that of gas, is released. In order to obtain the evolution of planetesimal density, we use a method developed in Stepinski and Valageas (1997) which is able to simultaneously follow the evolution of gas and solid particles for up to 10^7 yrs. Then, the disk model is coupled to migration model introduced in Del Popolo et al. (2001) in order to obtain the migration rate of the planet in the planetesimal. We find that the properties of solids known to exist in protoplanetary systems, together with reasonable density profiles for the disk, lead to a characteristic radius in the range 0.03-0.2 AU for the final semi-major axis of the giant planet.Comment: IJMP A in prin

A large amount of quantitative geospatial data is collected and aggregated in discrete enumeration units (e.g. countries or states). Smooth pycnophylactic interpolation aims to find a smooth, nonnegative function such that the area integral over each enumeration unit is equal to the aggregated data. Conventionally, smooth pycnophylactic interpolation is achieved by a cellular automaton algorithm that converts a piecewise constant function into an approximately smooth function defined on a grid of coordinates on an equal-area map. An alternative approach, proposed by Tobler in 1976, is to construct a density-equalising map projection in which areas of enumeration units are proportional to the aggregated data. A pycnophylactic interpolation can be obtained from the Jacobian of this projection. Here, we describe a software implementation of this method. Although solutions are not necessarily optimal in terms of predefined quantitative measures of smoothness, our method is computationally efficient and can potentially be used in tandem with other methods to accelerate convergence towards an optimal solution

ALTERATION OF THE EPHA2/EPHRIN-A SIGNALING AXIS IN PSORIATIC EPIDERMIS

EphA2 is a receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) that triggers keratinocyte differentiation upon activation and subsequently down-regulation by ephrin-A1 ligand. The objective for this study was to determine if the EphA2/ephrin-A1 signaling axis was altered in psoriasis, an inflammatory skin condition where keratinocyte differentiation is abnormal. Microarray analysis of skin biopsies from psoriasis patients revealed increased mRNA transcripts for several members of this RTK family in plaques, including the EphA1, EphA2 and EphA4 subtypes prominently expressed by keratinocytes. Of these, EphA2 showed the greatest up-regulation, a finding that was confirmed by quantitative RT-PCR, IHC analysis and ELISA. In contrast, psoriatic lesions exhibited reduced ephrin-A ligand immunoreactivity. Exposure of primary keratinocytes induced to differentiated in high calcium or a 3-dimensiosnal raft culture of human epidermis to a combination of growth factors and cytokines elevated in psoriasis increased EphA2 mRNA and protein expression while inducing S100A7 and disrupting differentiation. Pharmacological delivery of a soluble ephrin-A1 peptidomimetic ligand led to a reduction in EphA2 expression and ameliorated proliferation and differentiation in raft cultures exposed to EGF and IL-1α. These findings suggest that ephrin-A1-mediated down-regulation of EphA2 supports keratinocyte differentiation in the context of cytokine perturbation

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Endothelial dysfunction is thought to be a potential mechanism for the decreased presence of coronary collaterals. The aim of the study was to investigate the association between systemic endothelial function and the extent of coronary collaterals.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We investigated the association between endothelial function assessed via flow mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery following reactive hyperemia and the extent of coronary collaterals graded from 0 to 3 according to Rentrop classification in a cohort of 171 consecutive patients who had high grade coronary stenosis or occlusion on their angiograms.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mean age was 61 years and 75% were males. Of the 171 patients 88 (51%) had well developed collaterals (grades of 2 or 3) whereas 83 (49%) had impaired collateral development (grades of 0 or 1). Patients with poor collaterals were significantly more likely to have diabetes (<it>p </it>= 0.001), but less likely to have used statins (<it>p </it>= 0.083). FMD measurements were not significantly different among good and poor collateral groups (11.5 ± 5.6 vs. 10.4 ± 6.2% respectively, <it>p </it>= 0.214). Nitroglycerin mediated dilation was also similar (13.4 ± 5.9 vs. 12.8 ± 6.5%, <it>p </it>= 0.521).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>No significant association was found between the extent of angiographically visible coronary collaterals and systemic endothelial function assessed by FMD of the brachial artery.</p

Neurological diseases as primary gliopathies: a reassessment of neurocentrism

    Get PDF
Diseases of the human brain are almost universally attributed to malfunction or loss of nerve cells. However, a considerable amount of work has, during the last decade, expanded our view on the role of astrocytes in CNS (central nervous system), and this analysis suggests that astrocytes contribute to both initiation and propagation of many (if not all) neurological diseases. Astrocytes provide metabolic and trophic support to neurons and oligodendrocytes. Here, we shall endeavour a broad overviewing of the progress in the field and forward the idea that loss of homoeostatic astroglial function leads to an acute loss of neurons in the setting of acute insults such as ischaemia, whereas more subtle dysfunction of astrocytes over periods of months to years contributes to epilepsy and to progressive loss of neurons in neurodegenerative diseases. The majority of therapeutic drugs currently in clinical use target neuronal receptors, channels or transporters. Future therapeutic efforts may benefit by a stronger focus on the supportive homoeostatic functions of astrocytes

Conformational Control of the Binding of the Transactivation Domain of the MLL Protein and c-Myb to the KIX Domain of CREB

The KIX domain of CBP is a transcriptional coactivator. Concomitant binding to the activation domain of proto-oncogene protein c-Myb and the transactivation domain of the trithorax group protein mixed lineage leukemia (MLL) transcription factor lead to the biologically active ternary MLL∶KIX∶c-Myb complex which plays a role in Pol II-mediated transcription. The binding of the activation domain of MLL to KIX enhances c-Myb binding. Here we carried out molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for the MLL∶KIX∶c-Myb ternary complex, its binary components and KIX with the goal of providing a mechanistic explanation for the experimental observations. The dynamic behavior revealed that the MLL binding site is allosterically coupled to the c-Myb binding site. MLL binding redistributes the conformational ensemble of KIX, leading to higher populations of states which favor c-Myb binding. The key element in the allosteric communication pathways is the KIX loop, which acts as a control mechanism to enhance subsequent binding events. We tested this conclusion by in silico mutations of loop residues in the KIX∶MLL complex and by comparing wild type and mutant dynamics through MD simulations. The loop assumed MLL binding conformation similar to that observed in the KIX∶c-Myb state which disfavors the allosteric network. The coupling with c-Myb binding site faded, abolishing the positive cooperativity observed in the presence of MLL. Our major conclusion is that by eliciting a loop-mediated allosteric switch between the different states following the binding events, transcriptional activation can be regulated. The KIX system presents an example how nature makes use of conformational control in higher level regulation of transcriptional activity and thus cellular events
